Changes To Georgia’s Dig Law Taking Place July 1, 2016

Duluth, GA – June 2, 2015 – The Georgia Utility Facility Protection Act (GUFPA) will have changes that become effective at 12:01 a.m. on July 1, 2016. Beginning on this day, the life of a normal locate request will increase from 21 calendar days to 30 calendar days. (Section §25-9-6) This means that any normal locate request created after this date will be eligible to restake 3 business days prior to the expiration date.

  • Locate Requests created on June 30, 2016 will be valid for 21 calendar days and may be restaked on 3 business days prior to your expiration date. Refer to your locate request for the exact dates for restaking.
  • Locate Requests created on and after July 1, 2016 will be valid for 30 calendar days. You may restake 3 business days prior to your expiration date. Refer to your locate request for the exact dates for restaking.

Additionally, a change to section §25-9-11.1 will be taking place stating that:
“No local governing authority shall enforce any ordinance or resolution which imposes fines for a violation of a local ordinance or resolution that establishes requirements for white lining, marking of utility facilities, re-marking of utility facilities, or otherwise locating utility facilities or sewer laterals for any locate request or large project.”
